Spring Cleaning

2/21/2020 (Permalink)

I don't know about you, but having my house clean is important because a clean house makes me happy.  I am also a realist and know that sometimes I let little things slide because I get busy with life.  Spring is quickly approaching and I have my deep clean day written down in my planner so I will make it a priority to scrub my house from top to bottom.

Aside from the usual scrubbing of walls, ceilings, fixtures and upholstery, there are a couple of things that I didn't think about doing during this time, but it will certainly help in making sure it is done annually if I make a point to do it all at once.

I was looking for different tips and tricks to help make my cleaning go a little smoother and saw a few things that I never even thought to do during my heavy cleaning.

Make a schedule. I am a distracted cleaner, so I have multiple tasks going at one time. However, I read a lot of people can stay on task by setting a daily (if you're splitting it between numerous days) or hourly (if you want to get it all done in one day) schedule and STICK TO IT! This helps cut down on the number of tasks you have going and you are able to focus on one thing at a time.

The medicine cabinet is not something most people clean regularly and if you're anything like the majority, you have old, unused, expired medicines in there. Remember to clear that out and dispose of the medications safely and legally.

It is also recommended to change or wash the shower curtain (I do mine monthly) or change the liner when you are doing your spring cleaning.

It is also a great time to start thinking about what clothes you no longer need or wear and clear out some closet space.

Please make sure to be mindful and cautious as to what cleaning agents you should use and don't do anything to bring harm to yourself, your family or your pets.  Not everything mixes well together and some combinations can create fumes that will make you sick.

Now is a great time to start making a checklist on what you want to tackle!

Happy Cleaning!

Do I Need to Have My Air Ducts Cleaned?

4/24/2017 (Permalink)

A professional air duct inspection will determine if your system needs cleaned.

Spring is the season we are asked the most about air duct cleaning. Getting our home or business at optimal cleanliness is on our minds but many are motivated to ask because of allergens. Others see high energy bills looming in the coming summer months and are looking for ways to reduce those cooling bills. All are good reasons to explore having your air ducts professionally cleaned by SERVPRO of Carthage-Joplin.

Let’s take a look first at the health benefits. Our everyday activities create contaminates in the home. Dust, dander, mold, and other pollutants fill our indoor air. Outdoor pollutants such as pollen are easily introduced into our indoor environment with open windows on a cool evening or just the normal opening of doors in daily activity. These contaminates are pulled into our HVAC system and recirculated through our home many times over on a daily basis. As the pollutants are continually pulled into the system much of it can start to collect inside the system. The EPA estimates indoor air is 3 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor.

Removing these pollutants from your home makes since and can help relieve symptoms related to some allergen contributed respiratory issues.  While maintaining a clean home is crucial to good health, there is no scientific studies that guarantee’s better health after air duct cleaning. Let’s be real for a minute though; if pollutants and allergens bother you or your family, and are visibly present in your home, chances are you will get relief from their effects if they are removed!

Now let’s talk cold hard cash. The US Department of Energy reports 20 to 40 percent of energy used to heat and cool homes in this country is wasted. There are a lot of reasons your HVAC is not running at optimum efficiency but one reason could be because dirt and other contaminates force the unit to work harder to do its job. A clean HVAC unit is an efficient unit which could save you money. That makes most people happy.

We have established why duct cleaning is a good idea but how often does it need done? That varies based on your circumstances. A farm house on a dirt road who burns wood in a fireplace all winter and the occupants smoke cigarettes will need cleaned more often than a home in a more urban setting who haven’t introduced as many possible pollutants into their environment. SERVPRO of Carthage and Joplin can give you a free evaluation to see we if believe duct cleaning in your home or business is necessary.

When was the last time you had your air ducts cleaned? If the answer is never, which is the answer we get from most folks we talk to, call today. 417-623-1388

Spring Cleaning in the Four-States

4/17/2017 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Carthage-Joplin for help with your Spring Cleaning projects.

Spring has sprung in the Four-States! This is the time of year we seem to get excited about home and office projects. We dream of the perfectly manicured yards, full of freshly planted flowers, detailed automobiles, and of course a spotless home or office. We put a great amount of thought into this process each year. We make lists and plans but soon the reality of life hits and we don’t seem to find all the time we thought we were going to have. Between baseball practice, dance recitals, and graduation parties our spring cleaning time gets widdle down quickly.

We at SERVPRO of Carthage-Joplin want to offer a few suggestions to possibly help you get a few more items checked off that list this spring.

  • Divide and Conquer: Our to-do list sometimes begin obtainable but quickly grow out of control. Make a list of different sections of your home or business. These smaller lists make it easier to see the fruits of your labors by being easily accomplished in an afternoon or weekend. These small divided lists can be delegated to children or employees as well.
  • Now that we are including our children at home or our employees at the office, let’s make sure it is fun and rewarding. At home that means fun music and ice cream when you are done. At the office; well you will need to figure out what best motivates your valued employees.
  • Be safe! We cannot stress this enough. Much of the time spring cleaning means dragging items out of a closet or garage, sorting, and placing back into said storage facility slightly more organized than you found them. These piles of items can be a trip hazard or have sharp edges which can result in a nasty cut if you are not carful.
  • Be careful of where you store items. There are sections of your home or office that are unique to any other. A garage in your home or the storage closets in your business for example are used to store all kinds of potential harmful materials if they are stored improperly. Make sure any potential explosive or flammable items are not stored near a furnace, water heater, or other natural gas or propane operated appliances.

Nothing says spring cleaning like professionally cleaned carpets.

Leave this task to the pros! You have enough on your spring cleaning list as it is and you will be much more satisfied with the outcome when you rely on SERVPRO of Carthage-Joplin to professionally clean your carpets.

When was the last time you had your rugs cleaned? How about your upholstery or drapes? We can help with that as well. Call today to get your cleaning scheduled. 417-623-1388.

Spring is also a time many people have questions regarding air duct cleanings. In next week’s blog we will explore the why’s, the when’s, and the how’s of air duct cleaning.
